Aurora Borealis at Blea Tarn

2024 has been an incredible year for the aurora borealis, as we approach solar maximum in 2025. I was lucky enough to witness the ridiculously good event back in May, and also was very fortunate to capture a big event again in October. We could see there was activity, and on the 10th October I met a fellow astrophotographer at Blea Tarn.

I couldn’t believe my eyes-it was an amazing experience. Red was visible with the naked eye, along with coronal aurora and big pillars. There was so much to look at, and there was aurora visible every direction…even south! It was difficult to decide where to point the camera.

As this was my second big auroral event I have witnessed (so far- hopefully more to come!) and I reflect on the experience, I get so excited by what I see that all thought on composition goes out of the window. Something to work on in 2025!
