Auroral Corona Bardsey Island
10th May 2024. A night I will never forget, it’s magic ingrained in my memory. The first really intense northern light event I was very fortunate to witness (hopefully with many more to come). It really was once in a lifetime. It was approaching dawn when we packed up to leave, and it had been the most enchanting night of my life.
The aurora was visible in every direction, it was hard to know where to look or shoot. This was an auroral corona visible with the centre of the crown just off from Bardsey Island, and was to the south/south west. I really wish I had worked on composition more that night; but I was filled with excitement and wonder.
In 2023 Ynys Enlli (Bardsey Island) was the first place in Europe to receive International Dark Sky Santuary certification by the International Dark Skies Association. I can only imagine what this display would have looked like from the island itself- and is on my list of places to do some night sky photography.
