Starlit Eglwys Cwyfan, the Little Church in the Sea

Another night in early August 2024 I was treated to another clear night at this location, which is stunning in the day but has a far more magical feel at night! It was so peaceful sat here watching the stars.

This Church dates back to the 12th Century and was built in dedication to Saint Kevin (St Cwyfan) who founded a monastery over in Ireland. It wasn’t always cut off from the land by high tide, this happened gradually over many years as land eroded, and a small causeway was built so villagers could make it to church.

The waves continued to erode the land, and the church was abandoned and fell into a state of disrepair. Harold Hughes, a local architect, raised money and constructed a seawall in 1893 and restored the church. This protected the church from further damage. Now there are still church services, and you can even get married here.

The church can only be accessed during low tide, which makes this place even more special. This was a tracked image, with a two and a half minute exposure of the sky with a two and a half minute untracked exposure of the church. Taken with a Sony a7iv and my Sigma 20mm Art lens.
